Description:"Draksharishtam" is a liquid Ayurvedic medicine, used mainly in the treatment of respiratory and intestinal disorders. Draksha refers to Raisin (Dry grapes), which is the main ingredient of this product. Draksharisht  contains 5 – 10 % of self generated alcohol in it. This self generated alcohol and the water present in the product acts as a media to deliver water and alcohol soluble the active herbal components to the body.  
It is also known as Mridwikarishtam. Kottakkal sells this product in this name.

Draksharishta dose: 

  • 12 – 24 ml. one or two times a day, usually advised after food.
  • If needed, it can be mixed with equal quantity of water.

Draksharishtam uses: 

  • Draksharishta is used in respiratory diseases like cold, cough, COPD, chest injuries.
  • Draksharishta is one of the rare Ayurvedic medicine which improves strength and at the same time useful in respiratory diseases. Increases digestive power and promotes bowel movements.
  • Draksharishta also helps in intestinal cleansing. It is useful in relieving gastritis and hyperacidity.
  • It is also used in the treatment of skin diseases of Pitta origin.

Traditional uses:

  • Urakshata – useful in chest injury
  • Kshaya – tuberculosis, chronic respiratory diseases, weight loss
  • Kasa – cold, cough
  • Shwasa – Asthma
  • Galamayan – throat infection / throat disorders
  • Balakrut – improves strength
  • Malashodhana – cleanses intestines.
  • Dourbalya (debility),
  • Agnimandya (indigestion),
  • Arsha (haemoirroids),
  • Udavarta (regurgitation),
  • Raktapitta (bleeding disorders),
  • Krimi (worm infestation),
  • Kushtha (skin diseases),
  • Kamala (jaundice),
  • Pandu (anemia), Akshiroga (eye disorders),
  • Shiroroga (diseases of the scalp), Galaroga (throat disorders),
  • Shopha (oedema), Gulma (gaseous tumors), Shosha (emaciation), Jwara (fever) etc.

Draksharishtam side effects and precautions:

  1. Over-dosage is best avoided.
  2. Store in a cool dry place.
  3. Pregnant ladies should seek medical advice before taking this medicine.
  4. Diabetes mellitus patinest should avoid this preparation as it is rich with jaggery.
  5. The patients with gastric irritation and ulcer should avoid this as it may increase the irritation due to the hot and deep penetrative qualities of self fermented alcohol.
  6. Excess intake may cause gastric irritation. 
  7. Also if large amount of water is not taken along with this Arishtha it may cause mouth ulcers.

How long to use?
Based on doctor’s prescription, this medicine can be used for 2 weeks to 4 months.

Pregnancy and lactation –
During pregnancy, it is best to avoid this / take this only under medical supervision.
During lactation period, it can be taken in lower doses, based on doctor’s advice.

Draksharishta ingredients: 
Dry grapes – 2.4 kg
water for Kashayam – 49.152 liters
Boiled and reduced to 12.288 liters, filtered.
Jaggery – 9.6 kg
Prakshepa –
Twak – Cinnamon – Stem bark – 48 g
Ela – cardamom – 48 g
Patra –  (Cinnamomum tamala) – leaf – 48 g
Nagakeshara (Mesua ferrea) – Stamen – 48 g

Expiry date: 10 years from the date of manufacture.

Storage: Store in a cool place in tightly closed amber coloured bottle, protect from light and moisture.
